Lys Gauty z Orkiestrą – A Paris, dans chaque faubourg [In Paris, In E’ry Suburb] Walc piosenka z f mu René Clair’a “Czternasty lipca” (Valse chantée from René Clair’s Film “14th of July”) Musique: M. Jaubert, Columbia 1930 (Polish release; recorded in Paris) NOTE: Lys GAUTY (née Alice Gauthier b. 1900 in Levallois Perret, France – d. Cap d'Ail 1994). Between the two wars in Paris shwe was called “the grande dame of the classic chanson”, she was also called by the poet Jean Cocteau the “sacred monster of a stage”. In her youth, she had to earn her living as a shop girl at Galeries Lafayette (she was of a humble origin, born to the modest family of the early cars repair owner). She earned just enough to pay her singing lessons, for she wanted to star at the Opera. In 19i5 she met a Swiss artists agent Gaston Groeur, who noticed her well trained voice and took her to Brussels, where he had taken over the direction of the Theatre des Dix Heures. It was where she had her debut on stage and recorded her first records in 1927, taking as her models two celebrated chanteuses: Yvette Gilbert and Raquel Meller a combination of poetic expressivity and crisp projection. Back in Paris, she became star of Parisian music halls the Olympia, the Empire, the Alcazar. She appeared on stage wearing a long white gown, clutching her trademark black scarf that she stroked and twisted and, looking just like a poster by Toulouse Lautrec, she sung with a rapacious smile upon her beautiful face and with a spellbinding vibrato growl, her heart breaking songs. Her greatest hit was 'Le Chaland qui passe' ('The Passing Barge') one of the many evocations of the Seine, actually adapted from the Italian love song, 'Parla mi d'amore, Mariu'. She sang the theme song of René Clair's film “14 juillet” (“The Fourteenth of July”;1930), with music by Maurice Jaubert. She featured in the first French recording of Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera which won her a Grand Prix du Disque. Norbert Glauzberg, Kosma and Kurt Weill wrote songs for her and the brightest male song star in Paris, Charles Trenet started off opening the first half of her shows. Gauty was finishing a world tour in South America when France was attacked by the Germans. As soon as she returned to Paris, she was questioned by the Gestapo about her Jewish husband, and about her Polish grandmother (née Pierkowicz). Under threat of deportation, she agreed, like many other French artists (Cocteau, Matisse, Jean Gabin, Alfred Cortot, Serge Lifar, Leo Marjane, Edith Piaf, Danielle Darrieux, to name only a few) to declare “loyalty” to the “new government” and go on tours of the Third Reich. When the end of the war came, she had escaped to Monaco, where she had contract for the recitals on the radio. One morning, she found a bullet by her pillow, a souvenir from those, who considered her as the nazi collaborator. It meant, her singing career in France was over. Lys Gauty stayed in Monaco, opened a singing school and started dealing in property. She never returned to public performing. Fortunately, much of her extraordinary talent has been recorded, and Lys Gauty began to make a great comeback in the 1990s, shortly before her death in age of 94.Great chanson singer: Gauty Paris, chaque faubourg,
