@thegoddessdiana9185: I heard a different version of this song back in the early 1970's, also sung by Billy Murray, on a radio program hosted by a DJ who referred to himself as, "Dr. Demento". As I recall, there was a second verse with a punchline about the public not knowing that the girls would soon be wearing "socks" after bobbing their hair and shortening their dresses.
